Total Loss Value of Your Motor Vehicle:

Do you need to know what the total loss value of your vehicle is? Check out these helpful sites. I typically recommend using Kelley Blue Book and NADA for an “estimated” value of your vehicle if it is a total loss (as these historically have been used by many major insurance companies in estimating the values of vehicles), and then use the other sites to search for vehicles actually for sale in your area to get the actual sales prices of what the vehicles are actually selling for in your area.

With this, you then have three sources to compare for the value of your vehicle. Use the highest value as your starting point when negotiating . . . the insurance company will use the lowest value as their starting point. You do not want to take the lowest, and the insurance company does not want to pay the highest – you should end up negotiating somewhere in between.

With this information you will have some evidence to back up your demand to the insurance company for the value of your vehicle:

  • NADA – https://www.nada.com/ – NADA is a traditional source that insurance  companies have historically used to get an estimated value of vehicles.
  • Kelley Blue Book – https://www.kbb.com/ –  Kelley Blue Book is a traditional source that insurance  companies have historically used to get an estimated value of vehicles.
  • Autosite – https://www.autosite.com/ – Is a site that gives estimated pricing on vehicles. You can also search vehicles for sale at dealerships.
  • Edmunds – https://www.edmunds.com/ – Is a site that gives both estimated pricing on vehicles and allows you to search for vehicles for sale at dealerships.
  • Carfax – https://www.carfax.com/ Is a site that gives both estimated pricing on vehicles and allows you to search for vehicles for sale at dealerships.
  • Auto Trader – https://www.autotrader.com/ Is a site that gives both estimated pricing on vehicles and allows you to search for vehicles for sale at dealerships. Auto Trader ALSO gives you the option of searching for sales from individuals who have listed their vehicle.
  • Cars.com – https://www.cars.com/ Is a site that gives both estimated pricing on vehicles and allows you to search for vehicles for sale at dealerships. Cars.com ALSO gives you the option of searching for sales from individuals who have listed their vehicle.
  • Craigslist – https://dallas.craigslist.org/d/cars-trucks/search/cta Craigslist is designed for individuals to buy and sell products. When searching vehicles many of the listings appear to be from individuals. Many are also from dealerships as well.

Appraisal Process – Disputes Between You and Your Own Insurance Company:

If you have a dispute between yourself and your own insurance company related to the amount the insurance should pay to fix your vehicle, or the total loss value of your vehicle, you may need to know about the “Appraisal Clause” that is in most auto (and homeowners) insurance policies.
